DJ Sketch Gray BIO

My name is Marvin Gray III, known in the scene as DJ Sketch Gray. You can just call me Sketch. I hail from Flint, Michigan and now live in Fort Worth, Texas. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Media. You can see my skills in graphic design, video editing, and motion graphics which includes 2D and 3D animation. But that’s not what you are here for! Let’s talk more about music.

As a kid, I listened to Motown and Gospel until 2008 when I found that Hip Hop was my calling. I have been exploring different genres and have become a true fan of Soul, R&B, and K-Pop. I started making music while at Kendall College of Art and Design in 2010 (where I also met my beloved wife!). I needed a job to support me through college, and the only one available was as a lab technician in a music studio.

What started out as a temp job that I knew nothing about soon turned into a passion. The instant I started messing around with those knobs, I was addicted to the craft of creating music. At some point, Alejandro Potter, aka Ali The Prodigy, walked in and declared himself a kid who wanted to be a rapper. Since I was looking to be an audio engineer we started working together, honing our crafts.

Creating music has brought me some memorable experiences. From the insane show in 2012 where I performed with Ali Ghost and Blkman to hearing my father compliment my music.  “Son your beat tape ‘THE FALL’ took me down a rabbit hole like Alice in Wonderland.”

About My Music

As a beat maker, the goal is always to make impactful, upbeat, bass-heavy tunes that get the heart pumping. If you had to describe it as a dish, my music is definitely some spicy seafood that leaves you feeling warm in the belly and a chilled Coke to wash it down with.

THE FALL is a beat tape inspired by the time I fell into depression after losing my first job, even after all I did for them. My beats sound like an epic video game, but I have the same energy as Dr.Dre. I also won an award for Best Mixed Song in 2013 and have performed on many stages, most famously for Jay Roc (Man, that was a night!).

With a life motto like, “I am always ready for the new!” I will keep improving my craft and pushing myself to keep putting out music that inspires, refreshes, and excites people!
